Vanilla OS is a lightweight, immutable Linux distribution, and running it in VirtualBox is a great way to explore its features without installing it on your main system. Here’s a step-by-step guide to set it up in VirtualBox:

Step 1: Download Vanilla OS

  1. Visit the official Vanilla OS website.
  2. Download the latest ISO file for your preferred system architecture (usually x86_64).

Step 2: Install and Launch VirtualBox

  1. Download and install Oracle VirtualBox.
  2. Launch VirtualBox after installation.

Step 3: Create a New Virtual Machine

  1. Click on "New" to create a new virtual machine.
  2. Name the virtual machine (e.g., "Vanilla OS").
  3. Type: Linux
Version: Ubuntu (64-bit) or Other Linux (64-bit)
  4. Click Next.

Step 4: Configure Resources

  1. Memory (RAM): Allocate at least 2 GB (2048 MB) or more, depending on your host system.
  2. Create a Virtual Hard Disk:
    • Select "Create a virtual hard disk now."
    • Choose VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image).
    • Choose "Dynamically allocated" or "Fixed size" (dynamic saves disk space).
    • ||Set a size of at least 50 or above GB.||

Step 5: Attach the Vanilla OS ISO

  1. Go to the Settings of the newly created virtual machine.
  2. Navigate to the Storage section.
  3. Under the "Controller: IDE," click on the empty disk icon.
  4. Click the disk icon next to "Optical Drive" and choose "Choose a disk file."
  5. Select the Vanilla OS ISO file you downloaded.

Step 6: Adjust System Settings

  1. ||Enable Efi (Special OS only)||
  2. Processor: Under the "System" tab, allocate at least 2 CPUs (if your host system allows).
  3. Display: Under the "Display" tab, set Video Memory to 128 MB.
  4. Network: Set to NAT (recommended) or Bridged Adapter for external network access.

Step 7: Boot the Virtual Machine

  1. Start the virtual machine.
  2. The Vanilla OS installer should load. Follow the installation prompts:
    • Choose language, time zone, and keyboard layout.
    • Set up a username and password.
    • Select the disk and proceed with installation.

Step 8: Complete Installation

  1. After installation, shut down the virtual machine.
  2. Go back to VirtualBox settings and remove the ISO from the virtual drive (under Storage > Optical Drive > Remove disk).
  3. Start the virtual machine again, and Vanilla OS should boot from the virtual disk.
